Cub Scouts is a program open to boys and girls kindergarten through 5th grade teaching character, citizenship, personal fitness and leadership. It is a branch of the Boy Scouts of America tailored for younger kids. When Cub Scouts reach 5th grade, they are then eligible to cross over into the Scouts BSA program.
The Scouting program teaches young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. These values are taught through fun activities, with an emphasis on learning about and exploring the outdoors.
A Cub Scout Pack is made up of a group of dens. Each den is made up of a group of kids in the same grade.
Lion Den - Kindergarten
Tiger Den - 1st Grade
Wolf Den - 2nd Grade
Bear Den - 3rd Grade
Webelos Den - 4th Grade
Arrow of Light Den - 5th Grade
A den is led by a parent volunteer called the Den Leader.
There are 3 other key leadership positions in the pack:
Cub Master - Helps ensure the den leaders have what they need to effectively run den meetings. Often serves as the master of ceremonies for pack events.
Committee Chair - Leads the planning efforts for pack activities. Holds a monthly committee meeting to ensure planning is on track for upcoming events. Holds an annual planning meeting to layout the pack calendar for the year
Treasurer - Handles the financial operations for the pack, including collecting money payments for pack dues, campouts and other activities with a cost.
To assist the committee chair, parents can volunteer as committee members and help organize and plan pack activities.
During the school year, we have regular den meetings Tuesday nights at 7PM. At a den meeting, we have a brief opening ceremony with all the kids in the pack, then the kids split off into their dens with their den leader to complete adventures towards earning their rank badge.
Around once a month, instead of using the Tuesday meeting time for a den meeting, we have a Pack Meeting. The Pack Meeting is an oppurtunity for us to recognize our scouts for the advancements they have completed. This is where scouts will receive belt loops and other awards that can be added to their uniform.
